NZ A v IND A 2018: Shubman Gill and Vijay Shankar shine on Day 1 of the third unofficial Test

The Karun Nair led side finished off another rain-curtailed day's play with a score of 248/4 from 69 overs.

Vijay Shankar stood out for India A on Day 1 at Whangarei

Youngsters Vijay Shankar, Abhimanyu Easwaran, and Shubman Gill shined for the visitors and helped India A get in a solid position on Day 1 of the third unofficial Test match against New Zealand A in Whangarei.

On the back of scores of all-rounder Shankar (60*), Easwaran (56) and Shubman Gill (47*), the Karun Nair-led side finished off another rain-curtailed day's play with a very fine score of 248 for 4 from 69 overs.

Earlier right-hander Easwaran, along with R Samarth, stitched a 98-run stand for the first wicket. New Zealand A inflicted a mini-collapse, where fast bowler Doug Bracewell struck twice to see the back of Samarth (47) and no.3 Ankeet Bawane(10). Blair Tickner and Lockie Ferguson too struck once each, accounting for Easwaran and Karun Nair (19) respectively.

This is when the middle-order stepped up to the plate, as Shankar remained unfazed by the precarious position at 150/4 and batted positively throughout his knock.

He then got the prodigious Gill at the other end and the partnership, glittered with some delightful strokeplay, helped India recover and eventually, excel their way through.
