Ishan Kishan is a small dynamite: Saurabh Tiwary

By Rashmi Nanda -

Jharkhand Ranji team cricketer Saurabh Tiwary was full of praise for this talented 18-year-old wicket-keeper batsman Ishan Kishan, “Chhota dynamite hai, dikhta chhota hai, par jab fut-ta hai toh bahut awaaz karta hai,”

Ishan has scored 633 runs in this Ranji season. He has an impressive average of 63 in just eight games, and will be looking forward to firing again when his side takes on Haryana on Friday.

We all know that every young player is trying to make an impression through big displays in the domestic cricket, but recently two boys have caught India’s eye.

And these names are Rishabh Pant from Delhi and Ishan Kishan from Jharkhand. Ishan Kishan, who started as an opener and captain of the India Under-19 World Cup team, but to the 18-year-old boy’s despair, He came back home empty handed.

Ishan reveals about U-19 World Cup, “Starting mein aake sab chakachaundh dikha, pressure mein aa gaya. I had never seen such glamour, so much media, live telecast games. Suddenly expectations went high and I forgot that these are the moments to enjoy and not to think too much. I was just shaky during India’s under-19 games. I let everyone down, Dravid sir ko bhi. He trusted me and I never gave the result,”

When he failed badly during the colts’ World Cup, that time Indian batting legend Rahul Dravid was there and gave a piece of advice to the youngster. Ishan recalled these words, “There is no point in feeling shaky. Go work on your strengths. Do your homework. Run karoge toh bada kheloge,”

Most of the Jharkhand players are famed for their aggressive batting performances, like MS Dhoni, who is available as a mentor for the state for the remaining Ranji games. During his mentorship with Jharkhand, Mahi told Ishan, “Bada run karne ke liye, starting ke innings mein shot cut karna zaroori hai. Let those 20 runs come from mehnat. And once set, a batsman can pace it up,”

Ishan Kishan scored an unbeaten 159 against Karnataka, whose bowling attack was very strong, even when Jharkhand was 4 for 80 that time he smashed 273 against Delhi and also hit 136 runs against Saurashtra in the Ranji games.

Ishan said that playing in such tricky situations was nothing new for him. A few years ago, when he stands for Bihar Under-16, his side was five down chasing 187 runs. That time his coach sent a note by a boy, where he told him to finish the game and then come back. He added, “Parchi thamah diye, ladke ne bola Sir bole padho, aur jeb mein dal do. Scoring in those tense moments gives you immense joy. I went on to be called that boy whom the team can trust when four-five wickets are down. Everyone should feel, this boy will finish off this game,”

Jharkhand Ranji team came in the full rhythm with an excellent run in this season of the Ranji Trophy. But the next five days will be a testing time for Ishan and his side.

They have five complete wins and even have outshone teams like Karnataka to reach the top spot with 39 points. In the last season, Jharkhand was the only team to succeed in all competitions, but won none.

In Motibaugh, Jharkhand will be seen trying to outplay Haryana and try to improve their record in knock-out stages in the next five days.
