Recently, India Today had conducted a polling process for electing India's Sportsperson of the Year 2016. As a result of that, India's test skipper, Virat Kohli has become the Sportsperson of the Year 2016 of India with a tally of 44.18% votes.
While the other Sportspersons of India featured in the list was PV Sindhu (31.51% votes), star all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin (13.83% votes), Paralympian Deepa Malik (4.05% votes), the Rio Olympics wrestler, Sakshi Malik (3.37% votes), another Paralympian Devendra Jhajharia (3.04% votes).
The year 2016 has really been a memorable year of Virat Kohli. He has dominated the world cricket this year like no one has done it before. Kohli smashed as much as 2,595 international runs in 41 innings in 2016 and piled up phenomenal 973 runs in the ninth season of Indian Premier League. He had ruled the field along with his teammate and brilliant all-rounder, Ravichandran Ashwin.
Apart from Kohli's personal milestones and performances he has also lead the Test team to the No. 1 position in the ICC test team ranking. His team has been unbeaten in Tests this year as they outplayed the teams like West Indies at their home turf, while New Zealand and England in the subcontinent itself. Adding to all this he had single-handedly powered Royal Challengers Bangalore to the final of the IPL 2016.
