The 2017 IPL auctions saw the entry of associate players in the auction pool and we had players vying for selection from Afghanistan and UAE. To the surprise of many, 2 players from Afghanistan, Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan got picked up by Sunrisers Hyderabad, and UAE’s Chirag Suri was picked up by Gujarat Lions.
However, the talk of the IPL became 18 year old leg spinner Rashid Khan, who was in the center of a massive bidding war and was finally bought for 4 crore INR by Sunrisers Hyderabad. He joined his Afghan teammate Mohammad Nabi in the SRH team.
Rashid has impressed one and all with his excellent control and his ability to grasp whatever tips are given to him. He is also a handy customer with the bat and can hit some big shots coming in at no.6 or no.7.
Rashid Khan spoke with Cricketnext.com and said, “My teammates call me 'million dollar baby’. I just smile when they call me by this name. I just want to go and prove that I am a million dollar baby with my million dollar performance.”
He said that he was eager to perform for the team and also excited to meet the legends associated with SRH franchise. Rashid explained,” I am eager to meet Tom Moody (Sunrisers Hyderabad coach) and interact with him. India batting legend VVS Laxman and spin wizard Muralitharan will be there to guide me. I am eager to pick Muralitharan’s brains during the tournament. He is a legend with 800 Test wickets to his name and under his guidance, I am sure I can improve my bowling skills.”
Rashid took 16 wickets in 5 ODIs and 9 wickets in 3 T20Is against Ireland in a recently concluded series and even made important contributions with the bat. “I am all set for the first match. If given a chance, I will give my best for the team," Rashid said.
Sunrisers open their IPL 2017 campaign against last year’s finalists Bangalore in Hyderabad on April 5.
