Pune’s ace spinner R. Ashwin was ruled out of the upcoming season of Indian Premier League due to a sports hernia and also to rest his shoulder after bowling more than 700 overs in a 13 Test long home season.
His IPL team Rising Pune Supergiants is now looking at potential options to replace Ashwin and are looking his prime rival in the recently concluded India-Australia series, Nathan Lyon. Lyon picked his career best 8/50 in a losing effort at Bengaluru, but impressed one and all with 19 wickets in the series.
Lyon plays in the Big Bash League is yet to feature in the IPL. A source close to the franchise revealed,” It could well be skipper Steve Smith's call if he wants to replace the best Indian spinner with the best Australian spinner. If that happens, it will be interesting to see if Lyon has the same impact as Ashwin.”
Pune already have Adam Zampa, Imran Tahir and Ankit Sharma as spinners, but adding an off spinner might help bring in the diversity in the bowling department. Pune also lost the services of Mitchell Marsh who is currently undergoing surgery for his injured shoulder and he had to leave the India tour mid-way.
Lyon can be a very good choice in place of Ashwin, as he out bowled Ashwin in the Test series and can also hit some lusty blows if needed at the end of the innings.
