With KL Rahul out of the contention for good 2-3 months due to his shoulder surgery, he will miss the whole season of IPL. This means that the Royal Challengers Bangalore will not only miss one of their core batsman, they will also miss his keeping skills.
Rahul doubled up as keeper and no.4 batsman for RCB since last season and this meant that RCB could play an extra batsman or bowler to fit their necessities. Now RCB are looking for replacements not only for Rahul’s batting spot, but also for someone behind the stumps.
Daniel Vettori, who coaches RCB has given his alternatives for the job and he named AB de Villiers or Kedar Jadhav to take up keeping duties for RCB this season. “Owing to a shoulder injury, KL Rahul will be travelling for his treatment and thus will be unavailable to play as a part of the RCB squad this IPL,” confirmed Vettori.
AB de Villiers has given up on keeping duties due to his chronic back problems for South Africa, but he has taken up the gloves in emergency situation, like in Australia in 2013-14 when both De Kock and Dane Vilas were both dropped from the team.
RCB have never had any permanent wicketkeepers apart from the first season when Mark Boucher kept wickets for them. They have used Arun Karthik, Parthiv Patel, KL Rahul and Dinesh Karthik as keepers in various seasons of IPL.
Jadhav has kept for Delhi Daredevils in the past and despite not being a regular keeper for any of the teams he play, did a pretty decent job. Maybe it is a good time for RCB to invest in a proper keeper.
