In the last few years, the 22-year-old Shreyas Iyer has impressed one all with his consistent performances in the Ranji Trophy besides doing well in the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL) for Delhi Daredevils in the last three seasons. For quite some time now, the Mumbai lad has been in the reckoning for national team selection but unfortunately hasn’t made it yet.
Sources have indicated that the Indian team management is thinking of resting some of the senior players who are playing constantly since the last 12 months. This could prove to be a blessing in disguise for some of the star performers of the recently concluded ‘A’ tour. After a match-winning unbeaten 140 in the final of the tri-nation series against South Africa ‘A’, Iyer might get a lucky break now.
Meanwhile, Kohli didn’t seem pleased when asked about being rested for the ODIs. “Who said I am not playing? I don’t know where this came from, but I have no problems in playing.”
“We (team management and selectors) are going to sit down on selection soon and we certainly have plans in mind and combinations that we want to speak about. So as captain, I am in the thick of things and knowing what to speak to the committee about.” he further said.
Besides Iyer, Rishabh Pant is another youngster who has been knocking the doors of the selectors. Even though he was part of the Indian ODI squad during the West Indies tour last month, but unfortunately didn’t get a game.
The selectors are also thinking of resting some of the regular bowlers from the side – Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami. The likes of Shardul Thakur and Siddharth Kaul who have had an outstanding ‘A’ tour may take their place.
