India Women and New Zealand Women met each other in a virtual quarterfinal match for the one remaining spot in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017 in England.
New Zealand captain Susie Bates won the toss and decided to bowl first. Their bowling reduced India to 21/2 in 8 overs. Punam Raut made 4 and Mandhana’s dream WWC 2017 has turned into a nightmare, as she walked back for 13.
But it was Indian Captain Mithali Raj and Harmanpreet Kaur who steadied the ship with a 132 run partnership. Raj went on to score her 6th ODI century- a 109 in 123 balls with 11 fours. Harmanpreet scored 60 in 90 balls. But NZ pegged back, to remove Kaur and Deepti Sharma on the score of 154.
Then Raj and Veda Krishnamurthy 108 runs in 13 overs or so. Veda was in T20 mode and smacked 70 runs in 45 balls with 2 sixes and 7 fours to her name. India scored 265/7 and only Leigh Kasperek looked impressive with the ball for the white ferns, as she took 3/45 in 10 overs.
When it came to the bowling, Indian bowlers kept getting wickets to keep NZ from making partnerships. NZ were reduced to 27/3 in 10 overs and 57/6 in 20 overs with all bowlers picking atleast a wicket each. Deepti Sharma and Rajeshwari Gayakwad did maximum damage to New Zealand batting, who struggled to play on a pitch that became slower and slower.
Finally, NZ folded for 79 runs under some brilliant bowling by Rajeshwari Gayakwad, who took 5/15 and India won the match by 186 runs and made it into the semifinals of the WWC 2017.
INDW265/7 (M Raj 109; L Kasperek 3/45) defeated NZW 79 (A Satterthwaite 26; R Gayakwad5/15) by 186 runs.
