The concept of super overs in T20 cricket has brought some more excitement in the game. Two teams compete at the highest possible level and the game ends up with both teams on even runs and the game tied is something that happens rarely, but whenever it happens, it makes the viewers scream with joy. The thrill of seeing the best bowler bowling one over against the 2 best hitters of the opposition team gives much needed boost to the adrenaline.
We bring to you 5 such exciting super over finishes in the history of IPL:

Kolkata Knight Riders vs. Rajasthan Royals, IPL 2009
This was the first ever super over of the IPL and it proved to be the best super over as it made many players household names. Rajasthan put on 150 runs on the board on the back of Yusuf Pathan’s 42 runs in 21 balls.

While chasing a trick target, KKR found themselves 94/5 in the 14th over and that was the time, when skipper Sourav Ganguly decided to show the opposition who was the boss. Ganguly hit 46 runs and brought KKR within 2 runs of victory. Kamran Khan bowled a brilliant last over, getting the wicket of Ganguly and stopping KKR from winning.

The super over saw Gayle hitting 4 fours to take KKR to 15 runs. KKR skipper Brendon McCullum gave the task of defending the 15 runs to Ajantha Mendis who had earlier given 19 runs in his 4 overs. But Yusuf Pathan hit Mendis for two sixes and a four to win the super over for Rajasthan team.

Chennai Super Kings vs. Kings XI Punjab, IPL 2010

Chennai needed just 33 runs in 37 balls with 7 wickets in hand against Kings XI Punjab in IPL 2010. Now it is expected from a team like CSK, to finish the job with atleast one over remaining.

However it all came down to some hara-kiri like batting from Chennai batsmen and a brilliant 19th over from Juan Theron, who gave just 3 runs in that over and picked up a wicket.Ashwin made 9 out of the 10 runs needed off Irfan Pathan, before playing a dot ball and losing his wicket on the last ball, leaving the match tied.

Punjab bowled first and CSK lost both their wickets for 9 runs in the super overs. With 10 needed for the win, Mahela Jayawardene hit Muralitharan for a six the first ball but lost his wicket off the next ball. Yuvraj missed his first ball, but managed to hit a four off the next to win the super over, ending a thrilling contest between CSK and KXIP.

Sunrisers Hyderabad vs. Royal Challengers Bangalore, IPL 2013

Virat Kohli (46) and Moises Henriques (44) helped RCB reached a paltry total of 130/8 in their 20 overs against SRH in this match from IPL 2013. However, RCB bowlers also made SRH batsmen work hard for their runs and it was the calm batting from Hanuma Vihari (44*) who took them to the last over. Vinay Kumar defended the 7 runs needed in the last over and forced a tie.
Cameron White smoked Vinay for 2 sixes in the super over and got SRH 20 runs in the over. Dale Steyn took the responsibility of defending the 20 runs against RCB’s Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli and restricted them to 15 runs, winning the super over for Sunrisers.

Kolkata Knight Riders vs. Rajasthan Royals, IPL 2014

KKR and RR faced each other in yet another super over in IPL 2014. Rajasthan had batted first and thanks to Ajinkya Rahane’s72, Rajasthan registered a competitive score of 152/5.

Kolkata stumbled their way throughout the chase and it was Shakib’s 29* form 18 balls that took them to the last over needing 12 runs to win the match. Kane Richardson managed to tie the match against an impressive Shakib and took the match to super over.

KKR scored 11 runs in the super over. Narine managed to give just 8 runs in 5 balls and with 3 needed to win on the last ball, Steve Smith showed a tremendous presence of mind and pushed the ball towards extra cover and completed 2 runs to tie the super over. But Rajasthan won the match thanks to their higher boundary count as compared to Kolkata and Smith was aware of that fact and used it effectively.

Rajasthan Royals vs. Kings XI Punjab, IPL 2015

The match between Rajasthan and Punjab in the IPL 2015 was a high scoring affair with Rajasthan registering 191 in the 20 overs batting first. Ajinkya Rahane scored 74 in 54 balls and Shane Watson scored 45 runs.

Punjab looked out of sorts chasing such a big total, but fifties from Shaun Marsh and David Miller ensured a thrilling finish to the match. 5 were needed off the last ball and Axar Patel tied the match by hitting a four off the last ball.

Punjab lost David Miller on the first ball of the super over bowled by Chris Morris. But Shaun Marsh helped Punjab reach 15 runs. Mitchell Johnson returned the favor by cleaning up Shane Watson the very first ball and with 10 required from 4 balls; Faulkner was run out by Wriddhiman Saha to win the super over and the match for Punjab.
