Partnerships win matches in any format be it T20, ODIs or Tests. We have seen many partnerships between batsmen form in IPL, which have been fruitful for the team’s success. We bring to you, 5 such successful partnerships in the history of IPL:
5. 1367 runs (avg – 40.2) – Michael Hussey and M Vijay
Michael Hussey and M Vijay were the best foundation that CSK had for a number of years. The duo is part of an elite list of batting pairs who have put together 1000 runs in winning causes. This feat is more impressive as neither Hussey, nor Vijay had any big hitting reputation before coming together for CSK. Their best effort came in a tournament winning final in 2011, when they put together 159 runs for the first wicket against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
4. 1478 runs (avg – 37.89) – Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa
Kolkata Knight Riders had a very straight goal in mind when they bought Gautam Gambhir in the 2011 auctions. Gambhir helped them form a team that has earned KKR two IPL titles in 3 years. Gambhir along with Robin Uthappa formed one of the most enviable opening partnerships in the IPL. Their best season came in the 2014 title win, when they had opening partnerships of 121, 106 and 68 in the final stages of the tournament, that led to their IPL title win.
3. 1711 runs (avg – 48.88) – Shikhar Dhawan and David Warner
Sunrisers Hyderabad took a tactical decision and relieved Shikhar Dhawan of the captaincy duties and made David Warner their team captain. This move resulted in the IPL 2016 title win for the team and the opening partnership of Dhawan and Warner is the third best opening partnerships in the IPL. They have added 1711 runs together at an average of 48.88 and will look forward to defend the crown this coming IPL.
2. 2117 runs (avg – 45.04) – AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli
AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli are the backbone of the RCB batting lineup along with Chris Gayle. The pair has dominated their opposition bowlers most of time they have played together. They are the only pair in the T20 format to have two stands of over 200 runs in a match. Their best stand came against Gujarat Lions in IPL 2016, when AB de Villiers scored 129* and Kohli scored 109, his last 50+ runs coming in last three overs.
1. 2512 runs (avg – 52.33) – Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle
The best batting pair in IPL history is of Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle who have scored 2512 runs together for RCB. Bangalore bought Gayle in 2011, after he was let go by the Kolkata franchisee as he missed the season due to an injury. Kohli decided to open the innings due to the lack of a viable opening partner for Gayle and that decision has been very fruitful. Together, Kohli and Gayle have been very consistent in giving their team big starts. However with such batting power, RCB will be hoping for an IPL title this year, after coming close to winning the title multiple times.
