Amit Mishra has proven that leg spinners are valuable commodity even in the slam bang version of T20 cricket. His success in the Indian Premier League as a leg spinner has paved the way for franchises picking up leg spinners like Pravin Tambe, Yuzvendra Chahal and others in order to give themselves a wicket taking option.
We look at 5 unforgettable Amit Mishra moments in the IPL down the years:
Only bowler with 3 hat-tricks in IPL
Hat-tricks are already a difficult thing to take in any form of cricket and to take multiple hat-tricks in a tournament is a brilliant feat. Yuvraj took two hat-tricks in the IPL 2009 stands out, but the only man to pick up hat-tricks for all the teams he has played for is Amit Mishra. Mishra has played for three teams in the IPL, the Deccan Chargers, Delhi Daredevils and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
His first hat-trick came for Delhi in IPL 2008 against Deccan Chargers, in the last over of the match, defending 15 runs. His second hat-trick came for Deccan Chargers against Kings XI Punjab in IPL 2011. His record third hat-trick came for Sunrisers Hyderabad against Pune Warriors India in the 19th over of the match.
That fight with Munaf Patel
Amit Mishra is one tenacious player who doesn’t let anyone take advantage of him. We saw a brilliant example of his fighting spirit was his altercation with Mumbai Indian’s Munaf Patel. Munaf was hit for a six and four by Mishra in his over and went over to give some choicest words to the batsman. Mishra replied in kind and the two almost came to blows with Munaf threatening to throw the ball towards Mishra, who stood his ground. It took both the umpires and Sachin Tendulkar to calm things down.
Second highest wicket taker in IPL history
T20 was initially called the death knell for spinners by cricket experts; however spinners have become the most potent weapons of every team in IPL. Amit Mishra also proved that leg spinners are a must for each team and his success in IPL has led to each team playing atleast one leggie in their team. Mishra is also the second highest wicket taker in the IPL with 124 wickets to his name, 19 wickets behind the table leader Lasith Malinga of Mumbai Indians.
This catch from Amit Mishra
You won’t associate Amit Mishra with Jonty Rhodes’ school of fielding. But Mishra has worked on his fielding and has incorporated many new ways to stop the ball including sliding and diving. But when it comes to catching, Mishra can be considered a safe catcher and this catch also shows that he possesses some quick reflexes. If Mishra’s hands hadn’t caught that bullet of a shot from Andre Russell, he definitely would have needed a dentist for sure.
The funny run out Rajasthan
Despite his 3 hat-tricks and 124 wickets in the Indian Premier League, Amit Mishra is more known and famous for his moment of ‘brainfade’ against Rajasthan Royals, where he missed a slower ball from James Faulkner and despite multiple throws from both the keeper and the bowler, stayed out of his crease and got run out.
