Flashback: Relive the moments of India vs Bangladesh, one of the best encounter T20 cricket has ever seen

By Sihyeu Prakash Singh -

23rd March 2016, the day Indian cricket fans would never forget. It was a World T20 encounter between the hosts India and their neighbour Bangladesh. India needed to win the game to keep their campaign alive in the WT20. They almost land themselves in trouble, until the most important three balls of the match was bowled. The three balls before which Bangladesh seemed to have a first ever T20I win against India.

Dhoni showcased the best of him as a keeper when he stumped Sabbir on 26 (15). The match got intensive when Shakib was dropped by Ashwin at the deep cover boundary on 9, and he made the most to the lifeline, hitting two sixes on the leg side. Though, Ashwin had the last laugh and got him at slip in next over. Shakib’s 22 off 15 could be a game changing innings, and so was his dismissal.

It didn’t stop there; Bumrah dropped another sitter at short fine-leg. He was having a bad day before he bowled an over which made it worse. He conceded four boundaries by Tamim who eventually got stumped for 35 in eighth over.

Bangladesh chasing 147 got off to good start. They also got support from Indian fielders who helped them with their misfields. Bumrah misfielded off the first ball and conceded a four. Tamim Iqbal was dropped by Ashish Nehra off his own bowling.

The Bangladeshi team dominated 39.3 overs of the game out of 40 overs. But you know T20 cricket, you need to win every single ball to win the match. A single over can change the whole scene. It is all about that ONE BIG OVER!

Shoulders down and pale faces of Indians showed that it’s just a formality for the neighbours to get those 2 runs. But… it is a game of Cricket. The game of uncertainty. The last three balls were yet to be bowled. The last two runs were yet to be scored. That is probably what going through M.S.Dhoni’s mind. The chats with the bowler started. Experienced bowler Ashish Nehra and Dhoni discussed a few things with Pandya before those last three balls.

“That is it!” says the face of Indian fans. They could not believe what just happened. Bangladesh has match in their pocket. 3 needed off 3 balls was a cake walk even for a club level team. Both the Bangladeshi players were celebrating, yelling and throwing fist in the air.

Dhoni handed over the ball to Hardik Pandya for one last time in the match. Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim were in the middle with the task in hand to take their team home. Pandya bowled the first ball wide and full, which was easly steered to deep cover for one. That brings Rahim on strike. The under pressure Pandya tried the slower ball… But it went horribly wrong. The short and wide slower ball was smacked by Mushfiqur through extra cover for a four. If that wasn’t enough Pandya bowled the next ball was bowled on Rahim’s body. Mushy got enough bat on it and scooped it for a four. The fine leg was up and the ball beat Dhoni by inches.

The game went to the last over. The most important one. Bangladesh needed 11 runs off the final over. No one would have thought Bangladesh will come this close before the match.

Mahmudullah crossed and got the strike. Exactly what Bangladesh needed. Pandya got the well settled Mahmudullah on the penultimate ball of the last over. It was a masterstroke by Dhoni to get the key man. He moved Jadeja, their best fielder exactly there, where Mahmudullah handed over him a catch. The ball wasn’t decent, it was a full toss. But he was lucky to get away with this. The batsman could have hit it anywhere, but he chooses the fielder.

Pandya again went for the slower ball, it was short and Mushfiqur tried to clear the deep midwicket to win it for his team. But the pull shot with no pace in the ball got him dismissed. Dhawan caught him easily.

THE LAST BALL! The stadium turned into Temple. Everyone started praying to every gods they knew. All the 33 crore god would have had the most busy 5 minutes. Dhoni, Nehra and Pandya had a long discussion before the last ball. The fans couldn’t bear it anymore; they just wanted him to bowl the last ball. Pandya bowled the last ball short and wide. Batsman missed! But they still went to run on a bye. Dhoni who removed one gloves off his hand ran into the stumps instead of throwing the ball.

The “calmdev” had to pull off a miracle to get their team a victory. Third Umpire came in action but Indians were already celebrating. “Out” says the led board and crowd went crazy. Bangladesh had a nightmare. Those who were celebrating three balls before were in shock eventually. Karma strikes hard!
