Tymal Mills was an unknown face for most of the cricket fans until he visited India for a three-match T20 International series and instantly started to make headlines for his eagerness to play in the ‘cash rich’ Indian Premier League. What followed it is a history now as he has received ₹ 12.5 crores deal from Royal Challengers Bangalore in the recent auction of IPL.
Mills was instrumental in England’s good show in T20I series against India, where he managed 3 wickets in three matches at an economy of under 8, but his pace variation and yorkers were very impressive which eventually helped him to grab eyes from franchise owners.
Pacer described this fortune change as a drop of the hat. He said “It was unbelievable to watch. I went silent. My best mate – Tom Craddock (former Essex leg-spinner) – had got up at 3.30am in England to watch the draft with me on FaceTime and he went silent too. I was gawping at the TV. We’d watched Ben Stokes go for big money and been joking about my chances but then it was like, ‘God’. The hammer came down at $1.8m US, or whatever, and my phone never stopped ringing.”
It was such a big amount for a youngster from Sussex. His story is not less than a fairy tale as two years ago, he was thinking to quit this game because of a major disease, which caught him in his childhood.
“I’d spoken with a few people and we knew there was decent interest from various teams but this was well beyond anything we thought possible. It’s life-changing, absolutely. Provided I stay fit I’m guaranteed 80 percent of that money and then the last 20 is pro rata depending on how much you play,” Mills added while talking with The Daily Mail.
The 24-year-old belonged to a financially poor family, where he used to wake up at 3 am to work on market stalls before leaving for School. Thus, he helped his family in that critical time.
Left-arm bowler had a wonderful season behind this Millionaire’s deal, which started from NatWest T20 Blast followed by Big Bash Premier League, McDonald’s Super Smash, BPL and PSL. Now, he holds a tag of ‘T20 Specialist’ ahead of the opening of IPL.
