Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has gone past Dale Steyn’s tally of 78 wickets in a single home season. He dismissed Steve Smith just before the tea break in the opening day of Dharamshala Test between India and Australia, which leads him to this record.
Steyn registered 78 wickets in the home season of 2007-08, but the Indian bowler has overtaken him as Smith was his 79th victim since September 2016.
He started this season with 27 wickets in three-match Test series against New Zealand, which ended in India’s favour with 3-0 score line. The 30-year-old added another 28 wickets against England and helped his team with the bat as well. Thus, hosts won that series as well by 4-0.
In one-off Test against Bangladesh in February, Ashwin dismissed six batsmen before getting another 17 scalps against Australia in first three encounters. After Ranchi Test, he was sharing this record with Steyn, but as he dismissed Smith in Dharamshala, he bettered Steyn’s record as well.
