Left arm Chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav was added to the Indian squad for the Border Gavaskar Trophy for just one reason, to surprise the Australian team and that’s what he did when he made his Test debut at Dharamshala in the fourth and final Test of the series.
Kuldeep, who plays for Uttar Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy, has been on the brink of Team India debut ever since he has impressed the selectors and fans with his bowling in the Indian Premier League for Kolkata Knight Riders and in domestic season. He worked on his fitness and ability of bowling long spells and his success in recent times was finally rewarded with an India call up.
Dharamshala made its debut as a Test venue and Kuldeep got his India cap from former India leg-spinner Laxman Sivaramakrishnan, making him the 288th player to play Tests for India. He took his time to get going, but when he started after lunch on day 1, when stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane brought him on ahead of Ashwin and Jadeja, he immediately got David Warner out to get his first Test wicket.
He got 3 more wickets and picked 4 wickets on his debut. He said that he was emotional when he came to know that he will be playing in this Test and Rahane and team management took a brave decision to play 3 spinners on a track which has reputation for seam and pace.
Kuldeep shared his views in the post match interview and we have the video for you to watch here:
