Kolkata Knight Riders have begun the preparations for the IPL 2017 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata and captain Gautam Gambhir is looking forward to winning the title for the 3rd time. Gambhir went to check on the pitch and was unhappy to look at the lush green wicket prepared for the team and probably the IPL.
Gambhir also addressed the reporter about losing the West Indian all-rounder Andre Russell, who has been banned by the ICC. However, Gambhir spoke about Russell’s backup in another West Indian player Rovman Powell.
Gambhir said, “We will miss Andre Russell this season, no doubt. Russell had a great contribution to several victories of KKR in the past. But at the same time, I am requesting you guys to keep eyes on another young West Indian lad."
Gambhir continued and revealed who he thought was the perfect replacement for Russell. He revealed," His name is Rovman Powell. He is only 23-years-old. He is an all-rounder, can bat in the middle order as well as he can bowl fast. I was really thrilled to have watched his batting and bowling video. I believe Powel has the ability to fulfill the absence of Russell.”
Gambhir was not happy with the wicket prepared by the grounds men and took a long look after his net sessions. However, he was optimistic about adapting to any kind of wicket. Gambhir said,” Character of the wickets in all the grounds in India is getting changed. So, in a similar fashion the character of Eden gardens wicket is also changing. That is the reason our focus was to recruit fast bowlers like (Trent) Bolt, (Chris) Woakes in the auction and we have done that.”
He was also hopeful of Sunil Narine repeating his brilliant match winning form of last IPL season again. “Sunil is coming back. I am hopeful that he will again regain his match-winning touch. He is no doubt a match winner” said Gambhir.
