Delhi Daredevils is yet to taste the success in the Indian Premier League since its inception in 2008. In every edition, they tried their best to change the fortunes, but it eventually never happened. However, this year, they were very keen to tick all the boxes during IPL auction as DD bought several big names in world cricket, but the team got two big blows before the tenth edition of this league as JP Duminy and Quinton de Kock won’t play this year following different reasons.
Team mentor Rahul Dravid sees this as a big blow just before the tournament and it can dent their campaign. “It’s obviously a big blow when you lose big players like JP Duminy and Quinny. If these things happen before the auction, then it is easier because you can plan better. But then this is how it goes and you cannot help it,” Dravid said.
De Kock has some fitness issues, which will force him out and Duminy opted personal reasons while announcing his exclusion. Though, Dravid is looking towards the young talent of the team.
He said “We do have talented players like Sam Billings and hopefully they can go up and perform. We have guys like Karun (Nair, who had the second highest aggregate of 357 runs in 2016) Sanju (Samson), Shreyas (Iyer), (Aditya) Tare, Rishabh Pant. We will also look to strategies better and give the younger players a good opportunity.”
In the bowling department, DD has some sensational names like Kagiso Rabada and Pat Cummins, all-rounders Angelo Mathews and Corey Anderson. Moreover, their skipper and spearhead Zaheer Khan is in full flow to take the field. Dravid concluded while mentioning Zaheer’s role in the team. He said “We have a lot of youngsters in the team and that is where we needed Zaheer, as he brings in that knowledge and sense of calm in the dressing room. You need that when you are playing a tournament like the IPL. Also, a lot of the youngsters look up to Zaheer as he is an inspiration.”
De Kock was the highest run-scorer for Delhi Daredevils in the previous edition, as he notched 445 runs throughout the tournament including a century against RCB while chasing.
