IPL 2017: Squad Analysis – Mumbai Indians

Will Mumbai Indians get their hands on a record third IPL title? Find out.

By Jatin Sharma -

Mumbai Indians is the most expensive team in IPL. Owned by billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries, the team represents the center of Indian cricket, Mumbai in IPL. The team once had the dream opening partnership of Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya playing for them and featured players like Ricky Ponting over the years.

They have won the IPL in 2013 and 2015, and also won the CLT20 titles two times. They are one of the most stable teams with a set core of players who have served them well. Let’s have a look at their squad for IPL 2017.

Mumbai Indians batting

Mumbai Indians are another team that rivals Royal Challengers Bangalore in batting prowess. Players like Rohit Sharma, Jos Buttler, Lendl Simmons, Ambati Rayudu, Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya have formed the new core group of the team after the departure of Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting and others. However, they have bought some really good players in Saurabh Tiwary, Asela Gunaratne and Nicholas Pooran as backup and pose some threat to opposition bowlers.

The issue with their batting is that though they have a like to like replacement for almost all their players, their core squad doesn’t leave chance for others to get match practice or chances and even if they get chances, they would have to fire from start, without playing themselves in.

Mumbai Indians bowling

Mumbai Indians will be happy to see their best bowler Lasith Malinga fit and roaring to go again. He has got an able partner in Mitchell Johnson and support in Jasprit Bumrah, Tim Southee and Mitchell McClenaghan. Their spin department is headed by veteran Harbhajan Singh and ably supported by Krunal Pandya, J Suchith, Shreyas Gopal and K Gowtham.

Mumbai has one of the best spin bowlers in Harbhajan leading their attack and he is one of the two players to have played for just one franchise in IPL. Rohit Sharma would be able to formulate a good bowling strategy using the abundance of options available to him.

COC Probable XI

Rohit Sharma (C), Parthiv Patel (WK), Lendl Simmons, Ambati Rayudu, Kieron Pollard, Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Harbhajan Singh, Shreyas Gopal, Mitchell Johnson, Lasith Malinga

COC’s Take

Mumbai Indians have been one of the most successful teams in the league and along with Chennai Super Kings, have dominated the league in terms of performance and wins. Expect them to do a little better than their last two seasons where they lost 5 to 6 matches in the initial stage. They are fully expected to make the play-offs and even play for the title.
