IPL 2017: Qualifier 2 – MI v KKR – 5 key player battles to watch out for

The 2nd qualifier between MI and KKR will see these 5 key player battles

By Jatin Sharma -

MI and KKR will go against each other to determine who plays RPS in the finals of the IPL 2017 at Hyderabad on 21st May 2017. KKR defeated SRH in the eliminator in Bengaluru, while MI lost to RPS in Mumbai.

This important match will see many rivalries between players during the match and we map out 5 such key player battles for you.

Gautam Gambhir v Jasprit Bumrah

Gautam Gambhir has had an awesome IPL 2017 with the bat. He is sitting pretty at the no.2 spot on most runs table with 486 runs to his name with 4 fifties. Jasprit Bumrah has just continued to impress all and has taken 15 wickets so far for the MI team.

These two players will be battling it out for the powerplay supremacy, as Bumrah can bowl beautifully in the powerplay and Gambhir, if he decides to open in this match, will have to chalk out a strategy to counter Bumrah. This will a must watch encounter during the qualifier 2.

Chris Lynn v Lasith Malinga

Chris Lynn has 291 runs in just 6 matches for KKR, but the most impressive thing is that he has hit 19 sixes in all. He makes use of the fielding restrictions during the powerplay and MI would have to employ their most experienced bowler in Malinga to counter this dasher.

Malinga has previous encountered Lynn in the Big Bash League in Australia and will know how to cool down the big hitting giant of KKR. Because if Lynn starts to go, KKR might be in a very good position to win the match from any situation.

Parthiv Patel v Nathan Coulter-Nile

Parthiv Patel has been highest run getter for MI this season with 377 runs. He has guaranteed 30-45 runs at the start and he knows how to get runs from anywhere and any bowler during the first six overs. The best bet to counter Parthiv is Nathan Coulter-Nile, who bowled brilliantly against SRH on a dicey Bengaluru pitch.

He can do the same to Parthiv, who lacks the strength to send the ball into the crowd with sheer power. If Parthiv is kept quiet, MI will be deprived of a relatively quick start and that can impact on their score or if they are chasing.

Rohit Sharma v Piyush Chawla

Ohh!! The love story of leg-spinners and Rohit Sharma this IPL season 10 will a highlight for the MI captain. He has been dismissed by leg-spinners so many times this IPL, that every team will employ a leggie against him from now on.

The otherwise talented Rohit has not shown the form he is known for, as he has only made 283 runs in 15 matches for MI. KKR will employ their leggie Piyush Chawla, who is a wily fox to influence the opener and get him out early.

Sunil Narine v Kieron Pollard

Kieron Pollard has been one of the reasons why MI stayed no.1 in the points table this season. His 369 runs are second only to Parthiv Patel for MI and he has rescued MI many times this season, notably against RCB when MI were 7/4 after Badree’s hat-trick against them.

The best answer for Kieron Pollard is his West Indian teammate Sunil Narine. Both have played against each other umpteenth time and Narine knows the in and out of Pollard. This will be a must watch player battle in this match.
